When entering the world of fabric and personalised clothing garments, you might start getting a little confused about the different types of items, and the different names many of the items have. We know one of the most confusing and debated topics is that of the sweater / jumper / pullover.
The truth is the difference between Sweaters vs Jumpers vs Pullovers is probably just the location you’re from and the country you call home. All of these items are extremely similar in function and style, as you’ll see below.
Sweater
A sweater is generally the term used in the USA for long-sleeved upper garments, often worn over a t-shirt or under a coat. Sweaters are usually knitted or crocheted, but more modern sweaters may also me made from jersey style material too. A sweater and a jumper are generally the same thing, but different words are used to describe the item depending on where you reside.

Jumper
A jumper is very similar to a sweater, and both words tend to be used to describe the same item. The word jumper is usually used more in the UK. A jumper is a long-sleeved item worn on the top half of your body, and like a sweater, is usually considered knitted or crocheted, but also seen made of jersey fabric or cotton too. Jumpers and sweaters can usually be dressed up or down, depending on the fabric and style of the design.

Pullover
A pullover is often used to describe a jumper or sweater. Because sweaters and jumpers don’t have buttons on the front, and they are ‘pulled over’ your head when putting on, the name Pullover came into use as another term for the same kind of item. You may get different styles of pullover, for example turtleneck pullovers, are different from the generic sweater or jumper pullover.
Other styles to consider
There are lots of other long-sleeved jumper-style items available as garment choices, and we’ll discuss a few of those below. When it comes to clothing, the choices are often varied, so it’s important to know all your options!
Hoodies
Hoodies are similar in style to a jumper or sweater, but have a hood attached to the back of the neck. Hoodies are often worn as a top layer too – so quite often you’ll find people size-up when buying hoodies, compared to jumpers or sweaters. Most people would consider hoodies to be more casual than jumpers and sweaters, because of the outer-wear element and their relaxed fit too. Hoodies come in zip-up styles and pullover styles.

Varsity Jackets
Varsity jackets are often made from a soft material (similar to jumpers and sweaters) but with a zip up the middle, and a slightly sportier appearance, these are a great choice. They look a little bit vintage inspired and make a great choice for sports teams and students.
